The Department for Transport (DfT) has published its two-year action plan ‘Road safety statement 2019: a lifetime of road safety’ with a mission of making UK roads a safer place for everyone.
Unveiled on 19 July, the action plan outlines a major package of measures designed to reduce the number of fatalities on the UK’s roads.
One of the 74 measures included in the action place is the introduction of increased penalties for failure to wear a seatbelt (the current penalty being a £100 on-the-spot fine). This measure was put in place after 2017 figures revealed 27 per cent of people fatally injured in a road incident were not wearing a seatbelt, highlighting 1 in 4 preventable deaths.
The action plan is designed to improve road safety and knowledge for people at all ages.
