The Commons’ Transport Committee is calling for a nationwide ban on pavement parking. Should the proposed new law be implemented, motorists could face a £70 fine if caught in violation.
In a report released by the Transport Committee titled ‘Pavement parking: Thirteenth Report of Session 2017-19’, the committee laid out the extent and impact pavement parking has on communities. While pavement parking has been banned in London since the 1970s, the committee is urging the government to consider a nationwide ban as pavement parking puts road users at risk of injury.
In addition to urging the government to implement the ban, the committee is asking for a campaign to be launched in order to raise awareness of the impact pavement parking has on those with mobility or visual impairments.
The committee recognises the implementation of a nationwide ban would take time and hopes the government will consider launching the campaign to help aid the issue in the meantime.
